Folded knit cardigans — how to remove pilling from a cardigan without damage

How to Remove Pilling from a Cardigan (Without Damaging the Knit)

Cardigans are the workhorses of a British wardrobe — worn open, layered, rubbed by bags and seatbelts. That constant friction means they bobble faster than almost anything else you own. The good news: pilling is cosmetic, not permanent, and you can remove it safely in under five minutes.

Why cardigans pill so quickly

Pilling happens when short fibres work loose and tangle into little balls on the surface. Cardigans get it worst in three places: under the arms, along the sides (where your arms brush), and around the hips where bags and desks rub. Softer yarns like cashmere and lambswool pill fastest, but acrylic blends are close behind.

The safest way to remove pilling from a cardigan

An electric fabric shaver is the safest and fastest method for cardigans, because it cuts bobbles off at surface level without pulling on the yarn beneath. Here's how:

  1. Lay the cardigan flat on a table, fully buttoned so the fabric is taut. Never de-bobble a cardigan while wearing it.
  2. Start on the lowest speed. The LintGone Pro has three speeds — low is right for fine knits, high for chunky acrylic.
  3. Work in slow circles with zero pressure. Let the shaver glide; pressing hard is what causes damage.
  4. Avoid buttons, zips and embroidery. Shave up to about 1cm away from them, then finish those edges by hand-picking any remaining bobbles.
  5. Empty the lint chamber halfway through — you'll be surprised how much comes off a well-loved cardigan.

What about the ribbing and cuffs?

Ribbed hems and cuffs are raised, so a shaver head can catch if you rush. Stretch the ribbing gently flat with your free hand and pass over it slowly, or use the shaver's protective spacer if fitted. For very delicate vintage cardigans, hand-pick the ribbing instead.

Methods to avoid

Disposable razors can slice the yarn itself — one nick and you have a hole, not a bobble. Scissors are slow and risky near seams. Lint rollers remove lint and hair but won't touch attached bobbles — see our full comparison of fabric shavers vs lint rollers.

Stop your cardigan re-pilling

  • Wash inside out on a wool or delicate cycle, inside a mesh bag.
  • Dry flat — hanging stretches the shoulders and increases surface friction.
  • Rotate cardigans rather than wearing the same one daily; fibres recover between wears.
  • Give it a 60-second once-over with your fabric shaver every few weeks so bobbles never build up.

A bobbly cardigan isn't a worn-out cardigan. With a LintGone Pro (£14.99, USB-C rechargeable) and two minutes of care, even a five-year-old favourite comes back looking shop-fresh.
