How to Remove Bobbles from a Coat or Winter Jacket

A good winter coat is one of the most expensive items in most people's wardrobes. They're also some of the fastest to pill — the collar, cuffs, and anywhere a bag strap rests accumulate pills rapidly through everyday friction. Here's how to restore your coat and keep it looking new all season.

Why coats pill so fast

Coats take more friction than almost any other garment — bag straps rubbing on shoulders, seat belts across the front, sleeves rubbing against a car door, collar against a scarf. Wool, cashmere blend, and woven fabric coats all pill from this constant friction. The good news is coat fabric is usually robust enough to handle a fabric shaver confidently.

How to remove bobbles from different coat types

Wool coats

Use LintGone Pro on Speed 2. Wool coat fabric is thicker than a jumper so can handle the medium setting. Work across the front panels, sleeves, collar, and anywhere the bag strap sits. The floating head follows the surface of structured coat fabric perfectly.

Cashmere blend coats

Drop to Speed 1 for cashmere blends — the lower speed protects the finer fibres while still removing pills effectively. Take extra care around seams and pockets where fabric is pulled tighter.

Synthetic coats (polyester, nylon)

Speed 2 is ideal. Synthetic coat fabric pills densely and the medium setting removes it quickly. These coats often have the most dramatic before-and-after transformation.

Puffer jackets

The outer shell of most puffer jackets is nylon or polyester and can develop surface fuzz — use Speed 1 or 2 with a very light hand. Avoid pressing down. The floating head does the work without pressure.

How to prevent coat pilling

• Use a bag with a padded strap to reduce shoulder friction
• Alternate which side you carry your bag
• Hang coats properly — not crammed into an overstuffed wardrobe
