How to Clean Sofa Fabric at Home (Without Ruining It)

⭐ Fabric looking bobbly? LintGone Pro restores pilled sofa fabric to like-new in 15–20 minutes. £14.99, free UK delivery.

A fabric sofa is one of the most used items in any home — and one of the hardest to keep looking clean and fresh. Professional cleaning costs £80–£200. Here's how to get the same results at home for almost nothing.

Step 1: Hoover thoroughly first

Before applying any liquid to your sofa, hoover every surface with an upholstery attachment. Get into the crevices between cushions, under the cushions, and along the base. This removes loose dust, crumbs, pet hair and debris that would otherwise spread when wet.

Step 2: Check the cleaning code on your sofa label

Almost all fabric sofas have a cleaning code label (usually under a cushion or on the base):

  • W — water-based cleaners safe
  • S — solvent-based cleaners only (no water)
  • W/S — both safe
  • X — vacuum only, no liquids

Step 3: Remove stains

For W-coded sofas: mix a small amount of washing-up liquid with warm water, dip a clean white cloth, and dab (never rub) the stain. Work from the outside in to prevent spreading. Blot dry with a clean towel. Allow to dry completely before sitting on it.

For tougher stains: bicarbonate of soda left on for 15 minutes before hoovering lifts odours and surface marks effectively.

Step 4: Remove pilling and restore the fabric

This is the step most people skip — and it makes the biggest visual difference. Fabric sofas pill heavily with everyday use, making them look worn and tired even after cleaning. An electric fabric shaver removes all the bobbles and restores the fabric surface.

The LintGone Pro on Speed 3 is designed for heavy upholstery fabric. Work in slow overlapping strokes across each cushion. The difference is dramatic — a pilled sofa looks 5 years younger after a single session.

Step 5: Freshen with bicarbonate of soda

Sprinkle bicarbonate of soda generously across the sofa, leave for 30 minutes, then hoover thoroughly. This removes odours from pets, cooking, and everyday use without any chemicals or moisture.

How often should you clean a sofa?

  • Hoover weekly
  • Spot clean stains immediately — they set within hours
  • Deep clean every 3–6 months
  • Debobble with a fabric shaver every 2–3 months
